The Lord of Bath
Britain's only hot springs, and the powerful who were drawn to them.
Bath's history
The Romans founded the city of Aquae Sulis around Britain's only hot springs, building a grand temple to the goddess Sulis Minerva and a bathing complex fed by the steaming water. Centuries later, in the Georgian age, Bath became the most fashionable town in England, where high society came to "take the waters" and be seen.
The Lords of Bath
Religious authority over the area belonged to the Bishop of Bath and Wells, one of the oldest bishoprics in England. The title Marquess of Bath, held by the Thynne family of Longleat House, keeps the city's name among the very highest ranks of the nobility.
