The Lord of Cambridge
A bridge over the Cam, a rebel university, and a royal title.
Cambridge's history
Cambridge began as a Roman settlement guarding a bridge over the River Cam, and was later fortified by the Normans with a castle. In 1209 a group of scholars fleeing a violent clash with townspeople in Oxford settled here and founded a new university, one that would grow to rival the very place they had left behind.
The Lords of Cambridge
The title Duke of Cambridge has long been reserved for members of the royal family. To grant a city's name as a royal dukedom was a mark of high honour, and it remains one of the most senior royal titles today.

Why the title mattered
A royal dukedom is one of the highest honours the Crown can bestow. That Cambridge has carried one for generations is a measure of the standing its name came to hold. To see how such titles compared with the ranks of the peerage, read the full order of precedence.
