The Lord of Canterbury
The spiritual capital of England, and the archbishop who ruled it.
Canterbury's history
Canterbury began as the Roman town of Durovernum. In 597 a monk named Augustine arrived to bring Christianity to the English and founded the church that made the city the centre of the faith, a role it still holds as the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The Lords of Canterbury
Real power in Canterbury lay with the Archbishop, the head of the English Church and for centuries one of the most powerful people in the country. In 1170 Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered inside his own cathedral by knights of King Henry II. Pilgrims flocked to his shrine for centuries afterwards, journeys later made famous by Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales.

Why the title mattered
The Archbishop of Canterbury crowned kings and guided the faith of the whole nation. At times his authority rivalled that of the Crown itself, as Becket's murder so dramatically showed. To see how such titles compared with the ranks of the peerage, read the full order of precedence.
