The Lord of Liverpool

King John's port, and the family who held its castle.

In short: Liverpool was founded by royal charter in 1207. Its castle and town were long controlled by the Molyneux family, who rose to become the Earls of Sefton.

Liverpool's history

Liverpool was only a small fishing creek until 1207, when King John granted it a charter to build a port for his campaigns in Ireland. A castle was raised, and a planned town of seven streets was laid out around it.

The Lords of Liverpool

The Molyneux family became the hereditary constables of Liverpool Castle and the leading power in the town for centuries. In time they rose to become the Earls of Sefton, a name still found across the city's map today.

Why the title mattered

Liverpool's castle guarded the gateway to Ireland and the trade of the Irish Sea. To hold it was to control one of the north-west's most valuable ports. To see how such titles compared with the ranks of the peerage, read the full order of precedence.
