In short: London never had a single "Lord of London". Its most powerful figure was the Lord Mayor of the City, an office held in an unbroken line since 1189.

London's history

London began as Londinium, a town the Romans founded on the River Thames around 47 AD. It soon became the capital of Roman Britain. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, William the Conqueror built the Tower of London to guard and control the city, and it has stood ever since.

The Lords of London

London was never ruled by a single noble family. Its leading figure was instead the Lord Mayor of the City of London, an office first held by Henry Fitz-Ailwin in 1189 and passed down without a break to this day. The most famous holder was Sir Richard "Dick" Whittington, who served as Lord Mayor three times and later became a figure of legend.
