The Lord of Manchester

A Roman fort that grew into a manor, and the families who held it.

In short: Manchester was a true lordship of the manor. Two families, the de Grelleys and then the Mosleys, held it for centuries before selling their rights to the town in 1846.

Manchester's history

Manchester grew from a Roman fort called Mamucium, built around 79 AD where the rivers Irwell and Medlock meet. Over the Middle Ages, the settlement that gathered around it became a manor, and with the manor came a lord.

The Lords of Manchester

The lordship of the manor of Manchester was held first by the de Grelley family after the Norman Conquest, and later by the Mosley family. As lords of the manor they controlled the town's markets, mills and courts. In 1846 the Mosleys sold their manorial rights to the fast-growing industrial town, ending centuries of private lordship.
