The Lord of Oxford
Ancient learning, and one of the oldest earldoms in England.
Oxford's history
Oxford grew up around a shallow crossing of the River Thames where oxen could ford the water, which is exactly what its name means. By the 12th century it had become home to the earliest colleges of what is now the oldest university in the English-speaking world.
The Lords of Oxford
The Earldom of Oxford was granted to the de Vere family in 1141 and stayed with them until 1703, a span of more than 560 years. It is one of the longest unbroken lines in the entire history of the English peerage, and almost no other family ever held a title for so long.

Why the title mattered
A title that old commanded deep respect, even from the Crown. The Earls of Oxford were counted among the most senior noblemen in the land, in large part because their line reached back so far. To see how such titles compared with the ranks of the peerage, read the full order of precedence.
