The Lord of York
Roman capital of the north, Viking kingdom, and a royal dukedom.
York's history
York began as the Roman city of Eboracum, founded in 71 AD. It was so important that in 306 the emperor Constantine the Great was proclaimed there by his troops. Later the Vikings captured the city, renamed it Jorvik, and made it the capital of a northern kingdom of their own.
The Lords of York
In the centuries that followed, power in York was shared between the Archbishop of York, the second most senior figure in the entire English Church, and the Crown. The title Duke of York became the traditional style given to the monarch's second son, and it still carries royal prestige today.

Why the title mattered
York was the capital of the north of England. To hold power there was to hold sway over half the country, which is exactly why the Crown kept the title within the royal family. To see how such titles compared with the ranks of the peerage, read the full order of precedence.
