What Is a Duke?

The highest rank of the peerage, below only the crown itself.

In short: A duke holds the highest rank of the British peerage, above all other nobles and below only the monarch, and is addressed as Your Grace.

What a Duke is

Duke is the grandest of the five peerage ranks. Unlike the others, a duke is not addressed as Lord but as Your Grace, a mark of how far above the rest the rank stands.

Where a Duke ranks

A little history

The title comes from the Latin dux, a leader or commander. The first English dukedom was created in 1337 for Edward, the Black Prince. Dukedoms were reserved for royalty and the mightiest magnates, men who governed whole territories and led the king's armies.

Examples:the Duke of Wellington · the Duke of Marlborough · Prince Philip
